Dial-up problem

Modem
SBCglobal dial-up software

(4 eliminations)
already replaced the modem. problem still exist.
uninstalled and re-installed the SBC global software. problem still exist.
uninstalled SBC dial-up software and installed AOL. same problem. I am
confused.
tried it over a friends house. same problem.

The problem is that once I connect and go to a second web page, I lose my
network connection. I can ping yahoo.com before I browse to a second page
but afterwards I can not ping yahoo.com meaning I am not connected. Right?

One mystery is that my modem is still connected because my phone line is
still busy. And it is showing activity.



Any ideas? I'm stuck.

You tried what exactly at a friend's hosue? What was the same and what
different? Did you take your computer over? Or did you load something on the
friend's computer and try it?

Are you running any sort of firewall, proxy, filtering software, etc.? Does
it matter what web page you first go to or how long you stay there?

I admit this is quite strange and I'd just like to have the best picture of
exactly what you've checked. Thanks.

PS - It's tempting to think parasites might be behind this strange behavior,
but I can't think of any specific ones that behave this way. Nontheless, you
might want to check out http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm, just to rule that out.

I fdisk and formatted the hdisk. And re-installed XP. Hacker software
shouldn't be the problem.

Used my computer on his phone line. I couldn't browse to a second page.
Only one page.

No. He suggested that I load AOL to see if AOL works.
