Re: upgrading Office without CDs

HP gets worse with every system they sell. Go to Best Buy and yell and
scream until they give you the Office installation media that you should
have received when you purchased the machine.

Fine idea, that. Go scream at somebody who just happens to work for Best Buy
when it was HP that build, bundled, and shipped the system. Nobody at Best
Buy has any control of that, and certainly not some sales clerk.

The only one that can give those disks is HP.

You raise a legitimate point, however the retailer has the responsibility to
supply the consumer with everything that should come with the purchase of a
computer system, including installation media for preinstalled software.

"Should"? Whether computers "should" come with disks or not, HP doesn't
bundle CDs with most of the systems any more. It's all on a partition on the
hard drive. The retailer can't supply what doesn't exist if the manufacturer
has decided not to include it with the package.

Where would the retailer get these disks?

It would be different if BB opened the computer packaging and removed
things, but in this case, there were never any CDs. HP was offering disks
for sale at one point, perhaps they still are. But that's the only place to
get them from. The retailers don't have them, nor does Microsoft.

You can file this under "Reasons not to buy an HP computer."

Yell at who?
How long has the OP had the computer?
While the manufacturer and possibly the seller have responsibility, so
does the buyer to ensure he has all that was paid for within a
reasonable time.

The answer to that question will help determine what needs to be done.
If excessive time has passed, the only option may be to buy it.

I remember many years ago a similar fight on the behalf of
consumers... System builders wouldn't give out the Windows install
disks, and it came down to MS saying that if the software was
installed on a system then the disks had to go with it.

As far as now, from what I've heard from several HP users, when you
start up your HP system for the 1st time, it asks you if you want to
create the system disks. If you do, you are prompted to insert blank
CDR/CDRW(s) and it'll burn it for you... voila, Windows Disk(s). I
would guess that most people either don't have any blank disks handy
when they buy a new computer (and aren't told by anyone to buy any) or
they don't want to take the time to make the disks.

HP does sell System Restore disks... the ones for my in-laws
4-year-old HP is $35.00. Don't know what the newer ones go for.
