Word creates hidden temporary files in various locations
on the hard drive. Normally these files are closed/deleted
when no longer required, but when Word crashes the
temporary files could remain on your hard drive and can
cause problems.

Before you restart Word:-
1. It's a good idea to reboot first to free any
locked files.
2. To enable you to see hidden files and folders,
open "My Computer" and then select Tools > Folder Options -
View - under Files and folders, Hidden files and folders -
check Show hidden files and folders. Also uncheck Hide
the extensions to known file types. Click Apply and close.
3. Open Windows Explorer and look for the Windows
temp folder which is either C:\Windows\Temp (Win 95 -
WinMe) or C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local
Settings\Temp (Win2000 - WinXP.
4. You can safely delete all files in this folder as
Windows will not allow you to delete anything actually
being used.
5. To find any remaining Word temp files use
Explorer's search function to locate them. Search for
files ~$*.do*. Select and delete all the files found.

Hope the links and this info assist you.
