View Full Version : Partition for Paging File

I starting using WinXP a few days ago. My drive is not partitioned. I read
somewhere that it's a good idea to have a partition for the paging file to
make it faster and less fragmented. How do I do this? Thanks,
Ross Payne

Have a spare system file ready and change the paging files in the system
properties

Ross,
It is not a good idea.
Unless you can put the pagefile on a separate physical disk you will not see
any performance improvements at all in having it in a separate partition on
the same disk as other things.

XP will always keep a good portion of the paging file in the same partition
as windows. If insistent, the smartest way is to devote a partition at the
beginning of second hard drive for that purpose.
Win9X/NT puts the entire paging file / swap file in the partition you want,
or by default, in the same partition as windows.

If you have only one physical hard drive, and you're running XP from it.
The hard drive has at least one partition.
