Look out ! Again this morning Norton's antivirus database update can't
get installed ! Like a few weeks ago, this could cause Win XP pro to get
very slow at startup like it did last time ! Symantec is starting to get
on my nerves. Not only does it refuses to acknoledge the problem, but
doesn't even send a public notice on this trouble ! Grrr...

Solution: Uninstall Norton. For that matter uninstall and avoid anything
with the Symantec brand on it.
Workaround: Free AV protection from www.grisoft.com - frequently updated and
non-system intrusive. Guaranteed not to screw up your machine.

How are you trying to update the virus definitions? Are you using the
automatic update feature? Are you going to their web site to
download/install the new definitions? If you only do the above, you are NOT
getting it all.
I update my definitions daily, and have never had a problem. BUT, once a
week I also run Norton Live Update. Frequently, there are additional updates
to the main program, or included sub programs. These are NOT updated when
you get the newer definitions. You must get them manually!

I use Live Update every day, I also update manually sometimes. But I
went back an hour or so later and got the Update this time ! I fear that
a virus, like the one I receive in my e-mails, in joint files, more than
5 times a week called " remove Norton Anti Virus " !!! may sometime get
trough ! ( it must be a French virus because this name is in French. I
also have a French version of NAV and Netscape 7.02 ).It has always been
blocked out but who knows ? A different version may show up and do
dammage like it did few weeks ago. I had to completely delete Symantec
NAV and reinstall it. But I had to go from my one year paid subscription
(29,95$ US) of NAV 2004 back to NAV 2000 because Symantec never retraced
my order number or ID and didn't want to let me download freely a new
copy of 2004 !!! I got this answer about three WEEKS after I sent a
demand via their tech support address !! So you see: I don't feel very
sécure with Symantec.
Thanks anyway for your help.
