How do I cause windows explorer or My Computer to open with folders view
enabled? I have one computer that does and one that doesn't.

try this: open explorer and set the views to what you want, then click
tools>folder options, click the 'view' tab and click "apply to all folders".

Ed, if you do not have a Folders button in your standard toolbar, add one.
It makes it very easy to switch back and forth between the single pane and
split pane views in any Explorer/My Computer window. To do this:
Right click on the Standard toolbar and select Customize.
Select folders from the left pane. Click Add. Use the buttons on the right
hand side to position the icon where it is most convenient for you.

Sharon,
Thanks. I have the button, but am trying not to have to press it every time
I open My Computer. I have one computer that comes up with folder view and
one that doesn't, and can't find the differance.

Welcome, Ed. It's probably something in the shortcut properties. Or the
explanation lies in how the shortcut you're using was obtained/created.
If you click My Computer on the Start Menu, that should always open in
folder view. Same thing for the system shortcut that can be placed on
the desktop by checking the box for My Computer here: Display> Desktop>
Customize> Customize Desktop> General.
If you use the keyboard shortcut (Win key+ E), that will open in
explorer view.
A shortcut with the /e switch in properties will force the explorer
view. Example:
A target line of
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,
opens at Explorer in explorer view with the focus on My Computer.
Change the line to read:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,
and you'll again end up with the focus on My Computer but in folder
view.
NOTE: The commas at the end of the above target lines are intentional.

Sharon,
Thanks. The /e switch is exactly what I was looking for. I have a couple
of shortcuts to windows explorer on my desktop for differant folders, and
now they're working as I want. The only one I can't get working is the My
Computer icon on the desktop. It still opens in folder view on one of my
computers, but not the other. When I right click it and click properties I
get the System Properties box and can't get to the target line.

Ed, you're welcome. Am glad we have some of this straightened out.
The My Computer icon on the desktop... If it is a shortcut you added,
delete it and then use Display> Desktop> Customize Desktop to add it
again. If it was added by checking My Computer in Display> Desktop> etc,
remove the check mark. Restart. Go back and add it again. Hopefully that
will "refresh" that system icon and cause it to open properly for you
again.

Sharon,
I appreciate all your help. After removing and adding it again with reboots
inbetween, it's still coming up without the folder view. I'll just press
the folder button each time.

Ed
