View Full Version : XP and slave hard drive

I've got a 120gb hard drive which is on the verge of failing. I took it out
intact, (OS and all) put in a new one, and got it up to speed. Can I put
the old one back in as a slave even though the operating system is still on
it and it was a primary C: drive? There may be some files I left behind
that I want. Is there anything special that I need to do first?

Thanks!

Sure, keep in mind tho that a failing hard drive may phark the entire
ide channel thus not letting you boot at all with your new primary.

Just set it as a slave and plug in (or plug it in on a cable on the
second controller). It will be seen as just a data type partition, and
you can copy things over

No, because it is needed before any user logs on, to find his personal
registry information (in the ntuser.dat and related files that must be
left where they are). But you can move any individual user's My
Documents (and other My folders): make a folder for each user on the
other drive. From that user's logon, open a window on it and on
C:\Documents and settings\username\ to show My documents, then with the
*right* mouse button down, drag it across and take *move* here.

I *think* you could also do that with the Shared documents folder in the
C:\D&S\AllUsers, but have not had occasion to try.

Also in Internet Options, click Settings for Temporary Internet files
and Move folder to the other drive
