I cannot get xp installed. I am running windows 98 2nd
edition and choose upgrade. After getting the dynamic
update I get the message that the install program has
encountered an unknown problem and is shutting down. That
is as far as it goes. I sent a report to Microsoft but got
no response from it so what do I do now? I do have an Hp
cd burner and an HP printer which both have known
conflicts with xp could they be the problem? Help. Any
suggestions? Thanks in advance!!!

See "How to Troubleshoot Windows XP Setup Problems When You Upgrade"
If you cannot workaround this you should try installing Windows XP
clean. It is definitely worth the time and the result is a clean and
more stable OS.
