Before I registered Word (MS Office 2000), I chose
Notepad from a list of applications to open a Word
document. Now, when I try to download documents,
the "heiroglyphics" of Notepad appear in my Word document.

I tried right clicking on a document then:

Open With
Choose Program
Clicked on the defult checkbox
Selected "Microsoft Word for Windows".
and Clicked OK.

However, even though the new documents are now
labelled "Word", the text is still heiroglyphics, the
default box is unchecked and NotePad is highlighed as the
selected application.

You can use the Folder Options> File Types as mentioned or
Right click a DOC file and choose Properties.
At the top you will see the default program for the file type displayed.
Click the Change button and select Winword.exe or Microsoft Word for Windows
(whichever of those two choices that the dialog presents to you is fine).
Click OK to close the out the Properties screens.
