View Full Version : Upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro

I am in the process of upgrading to XP Professional and
got the following error: "The signature for Windows XP
Professional Upgrade is invalid. The error code is
800b0100. No signature was present in the subject."
Now, I am stuck in this continuous loop where the computer
restarts and goes right back into the installation mode
(step 4 - Installing Windows) and then I get the error
again. Can someone please help me to either fix this or
at least help get out of this loop and back to XP home?
Thanks.

Maybe an error on the upgrade cd?

I suggest you try the resolution described in the
following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307153
By the way did you check with your computer manufacturer
before embarking on this upgrade?
Are you also aware that there is NO uninstall from XP Pro
back to XP Home?
Are you also aware that when you complete the upgrade
your computer will not have any of the XP critical updates that
you applied while in XP Home? This includes the critical update
that patches the vulnerability attacked by the msblaster worm
and its variants? So if you are using a cable modem or DSL
modem that is always on and you are not using a router or
have a functioning third-party firewall or the built in XP ICF
enabled, you better physically disconnect that cable modem
or DSL modem before completing the upgrade. Whatever
type of Internet connection you are using, make sure that it
is either behind a router or firewall before connecting to the
Internet and then get all XP critical updates installed again.

I don't think that's the problem, but even if it is, how
do I just get out of this continuous loop?

Thank you very much for your response.
Unfortunately, I already tried that and it didn't work.
Also unfortunately, the answer to all of your other
questions is no. I'm really lost here and don't know what
to do. Any further advice you can offer would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

What is the make and model of this computer?
What kind of XP Home CD was provided with it?
Is there important personal / financial data on the
hard drive that has not been backed up to CDR
or some other type of back up media?

Thanks a lot for your quick response. I was able to get
some assistance in the "Setup & Deployment" newsgroup. I
went into BIOS and changed the boot configuration to
access the CD and that worked (I almost sound like I know
what I'm talking about).
Thanks again.

Yes I checked out your posting to that other newsgroup.
I was going to advise the same solution if data loss was
not a concern, otherwise I was going to suggest a parallel
install. Hope this all works out for you.

if the machine has Home Edition already then it will run Pro.
