Question about System Info program

I'm using XP Home SP1 on a desktop computer. I just opened up the
System Information program. Under Total Physical Memory, it lists 512MB,
which is correct. But under Available Physical Memory, it only lists
223.23MB. Why such a low number?

It's not a low number. The balance is being used by XP for it's own code =
and disk caching.
