View Full Version : XP hangs after log in and before applying users settings

3 times now I have had a problem on My HP XE4500 laptop
when starting Windows XP. I get past the user log on
screen but then am faced with a blank desktop and no Menu
or task bars. The only thing that I can operate in Task
Manager through Ctrl Alt + Del From here I can see all of
the machine run some programs and execute a clean
program. What I can't run is Recover or Explorer and so
have had to re install Windows from the i386 directory.
This is getting to be a bit of a pain, does anyone know
why this happens, if I can prevent it or if there is a
better fix than a complete re install and register.

I hope this makes sense,

Many thanks

See "Resources for Troubleshooting Startup Problems in Windows XP"

Thanks for the advice, but I have used the troubleshooter
and all it can come up with is "repair" XP which is
basically re install, thankfully it does not lose my data
though.
