View Full Version : Move special folders to new drive? (My Docs/Program Files)

Can the default drive for newly installed applications
(Program Files) be changed from "C", to another local
hard drive? If so... how?
I also need to move "My Documents" to an alternate
drive. - I have no files from other users, or networks to
consider.
If anyone knows of a safe way to successfully move either
of these folders, a brief explaination of the proceedure
would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

DJ in CA,
When you move the already installed programs to the new location, they =
*might* cause problems. The following step explains how to change the =
default ProgramFilesDir to your preferred location.
Change Program File Directory- Line 82 right side:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Changes the ProgramFilesDir location to the path you specify while =
running the VBScript
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion]
Value=3DProgramFilesDir
If that does not help, change the ProgramFilesPath in the above registry =
location manually.
Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Navigate to:
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
In the right pane, look for the value ProgramFilesPath. Change it's =
values to point to your preferred location.
Always backup the registry before modifying.
