View Full Version : Using Sound Recorder on XP

I am new to XP.
On my 98 machine I use Sound Recorder to open WAV. files.
I do this because it is a simple, fast program which opens instantly when I
click a WAV file.
On my 98 machine I have configured Sound Recorder to play the WAV
immediately without my having to click the Start button on Sound Recorder,
then close the program as soon as the WAV is finished.
On my new XP machine I have used Tools > Folder Options > File Types to
associate WAV files with Sound Recorder.
I have two questions:
(1) How do I configure Sound Recorder on my XP machine (as I have on my 98
machine) to PLAY the WAV upon opening without my having to click the START
button on Sound Recorder, then close as soon as the WAV is finished?
(2) How do I change the WAV icon from the Music Match icon which XP uses,
to a Sound Recorder icon ?
Thank you.

1) Do you see Play as an action for WAV files? It should be shown in bold
as the default action. If it is not in bold, go to Folder Options> File Types.
Click Advanced. Select Play and click the Set Default button.
Also, under "application used" where the desired command line is entered,
try adding /Play at end of the command line.
%SystemRoot%\System32\sndrec32.exe /play
Test your adjustments. You may find that you still need to add the /close
switch too: %SystemRoot%\System32\sndrec32.exe /play /close
2) For the icon: you change this in Folder Options> File Types too. Click
Advanced for *.WAV files. On the next screen, you'll see a section dealing
with icons. Click the Change button. Use the next screen to select the
*.EXE file for Sound Recorder. Then select the icon that you want to use
for *.WAV files.

I've learned two interesting things:
(1) XP won't even let you associate a wave with Sound Recorder unless you
copy Sound Recorder to another folder than WIINT/system32.
(2) When you change a file association, the "Advanced" button in Folder
Options> File Types dissappears, and changes to a "Restore" button.
So, I guess I can associate waves with Sound Recorder, OR get the player for
Waves to PLAY on opening, but not both.
