Do you have identical user accounts on all machines? User names and
passwords should be identical on all machines. Also, you must have a
password and not an auto login with no password unless you change some local
policies on your machines.

connected though a D-Link router, which is connected to RoadRunner. All
three can access the internet. I can ping each from all computers. But I
cannot see the other computers in Explorer, therefor I cannot share files. I
can view the icon for Home Network (my user group name) but when I double
click on it I get an error message "Home network is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The
list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available." Please--I am
missing something in configuring my computers. I need help setting up my
network. Thanks for any suggestions.

What protocols do you have installed?
If you don't have IPX/SPX/NetBios installed, do it on all the machines. Then
in the settings for your network adapter, be sure that in the TCP/IP
advanced settings > WINS that you have "enable NetBios over TCP/IP" checked.
Then, of course, make sure that all your computers are in the same named
workgroup, etc..
Usually, that will fix your issue. You need to do it on all the machines.
This was sort of a quickie answer, and assumes that you're familiar with
adding networking protocols to your LAN, etc..
Anyhow. . .hope that helps.

Actually, since Dr. Reid has computers running WinXP, he should *not*
add any other protocols except for TCP/IP. He doesn't need them, and
some of them - like IPX - can be security holes. Enabling NetBIOS is
for mixed networks with computers running older operating systems. Dr.
Reid, you have said that you have created identical user accounts and
passwords on all three machines. You've created shares with appropriate
permissions. Now also make sure you have the Master Browser set to
"auto". Be sure your cables are good. Be sure your Workgroup and subnet
is the same on all computers (check for typos). Make sure the IP's are
in the same group as the router; i.e., 192.168.1.1 for the router and
192.168.1.xxx for the other computers and not 192.168.2.xxx or the
like. Since you have a router, make sure you are using dhcp. Make sure
if you have a firewall that you have set it to allow traffic on the
LAN. You want to have a trusted relationship with (for example)
192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0.
