Using Winxp pro. I need to get 'start/documents' to stop retaining the
document list. how can I do that. Seems like in was possible in win 98.

TweakUI has a setting to clear the list of recently used documents.
Also, I think there's a setting /somewhere/ that let's you specify how
many items will be kept there. "Zero" would be a good number.

Right-click start, properties, start menu tab, customize, advanced tab, clear list.
