Hi folks.

Problem with OE - any suggestions.

I have a mail account set up which has worked fine for
ages.
Last few days when I open OE it won't access the server.
I go into the account properties and notice that
my 'Incoming Mail POP3' box now says "localhost" instead
of the server address I originally put in. If I add a new
mail account with the correct details and remove the old
one it works fine. That is until I close OE. When I open
it again - same problem. Meaning I have to create a new
mail account each time I open OE.

Its driving me crazy !!

Steve,

Have you installed a Spam filter program recently such as Norton's
Antispam or Macafee spamkiller?

If so then this is it. However, it should still download the messages
as it filters everything before putting them in your inbox.

I don't have anyother solution if this does not work.

Hi Cliff.

Thanks for the help.
I've recently installed PC-cillin - an anti virus prog.
If this is the cause, is the only solution to delete it ?

Hi Cliff.

You were right !!! Thanks.

However there is a setting which allows you to disable
the filter.

Disable email scanning (by any anti-virus app) of outgoing and incoming
mail. It provides no additional protection (and even Symantec says it's not
needed:

NAV has caught several infected emails that got through my ISP, so it does
give additional protection. If you go to the web page you listed Symantec
says that it is recommended to enable scanning of email; I didn't see
anything about them saying it's not needed.
