We just purchased a new Dell computer, and to save money
used an old monitor. The monitor does not support
1024x768 resolution, and therefore when XP finishes the
inital loading screen, the display goes black. Is there a
way to make windows start with the screen resolution
lower?

Andrew,
Just after the Dell Bios screen but before the Windows Logo hit F8.
This should bring up a boot menu. Select Enable VGA Mode. This should
allow you boot into windows and see the desktop. At this point you need to
set a resolution in display properties your monitor supports. Reboot and
boot into Windows normally, you should be running at the resolution you set
in VGA Mode. Good luck.
