I was given an Epson C60 printer--complete kit except for the PC-printer
cable. I am having trouble getting it set up, the usual getting drivers,
install/uninstall, etc. and I get it perfect sometimes but I never know what
the thing will do the next time I boot it (spews paper with one line
printed on each, a lot of violent craziness.)

I have WINXP and have used both the CD installation for XP, and the
XP-update downloads from the Epson site.

1) Having just printed a good 8 X 10 photo, then it botched a 3KB text job,
I saw in the manual that they recommend enabling the "ECP/DMA mode on your
computer's parrallel port.". How do I enable this? Also
in what way will it affect things if enabled?

2) The book calls for an IEEE-1284 compliant parallel cable with a D-SUB,
21-pin, male connection for the computer end, and a 36-pin Centronics
compatible for the printer. I have an IEEE 1284 cable that sounds universal
according to the package except it has DB25 Male/CEN 36 Male Connection
specs. Could there be a problem with using this cable?

3)When I boot the computer I get the following error in an EPSON PrinterPort
window (I got this even after dl of Epson's update, then restart.) "At least
one service or driver failed during system startup. See Event Viewer for
details." Event Viewer sequence looks like 6 errors followed by a success,
then six more errors, etc. There is material from MS on this error, but I'm
thinking KEEP IT SIMPLE at this point (those MS trips often turn out to be a
project in themselves). It's an Epson PrinterPort error, so it has to be a
printer's problem I can fix with printer's stuff, most probably the
port--would that have to do with question #1 about ECP/DMA mode for the
parallel port?

I would be grateful for solutions. I am capable of any type of hardware or
software configurations as long as I have succinct idirections that take
nothing for granted. Thx, Missy
