When I format my hard drive in XP as NTFS, I always get an
8Mb of unpartition space. Can someone let me know why
Windows XP does this.

I think Windows XP reserves that 8MB of unpartitioned space
if one requires the installation of the Recovery Console.

Well, first of all, this was done by Windows 2000 also. I believe it is
required for maintaining some data regarding the boot options or boot image
of your disk.
