does anyone know what the administration password is for
xp? i'm getting a window coming up and it wants me to put
in the admin password. what is it? should i know it?

Try a blank password...unless someone has set it to something else.

Greetings --
Yes, if it's your computer, you certainly should know the
password.
WinXP Pro will ask you to assign a password to the Administrator
account during installation. WinXP Home does not ask, and leaves the
Administrator password blank by default.

On a Home edition system it will have been left as null by default, and
on Pro may have been left that way if none was explicitly set during
Setup. So leave the panel blank, OK, and hope.
