View Full Version : Stop Error Screen - DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_MORE

At shutdown I am get a stop error screen indicating that an error has caused
my system to shutdown (no, I shut it down myself) and if I am continually
getting this error it could cause harm to my computer. That is followed by
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_MORE
This is followed by lots of text referring to possible causes for this
error, focusing the recent installation of new hardware/software. A tech at
Compaq walked me some kind of "automatic repair" process using my XP
software cd. It indicated a repair was made, but the error msg continued
when I shutdown.
I recently installed a new HP printer. So next I downloaded their driver
update thinking this would fix the error msg problem. However, I could not
install it (when I double-clicked on SetUp, nothing happens). I proceeded to
remove the printer software and re-install it. Again I could not install
the printer driver update. HP tech support said there was probably
something in my msconfig>startup that was causing this driver from not
installing properly and related it to the error message that I am getting at
shutdown.
Any ideas on how to fix all of this? Thanks in advance.

Have you installed any new software since the system failures have started
happening?
It could be a corrupt or incompatible application that has been installed.
To the right all the numbers on the screen it usually shows a DLL file or
something like that
e.g 09485069 1093284 a07e405 0d93e283 - GDIHOOK.DLL <----
This DLL will be used by the software that is causing the Blue screen, if
you are shutting down when this happens, the problem is probably caused by
Windows not being able to unload the driver and crashing the system, If you
search your system for this file it will hopefully be in one of your
application directories, you could then try deinstalling this application
and see if this then allows your system to shutdown correctly.
If it is located in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory you could have a problem
finding which app put it there, you could try performing a Google search for
that file and it may come back with an Application name.
Do not just delete the file as this could wreck your system, it may be that
it is time to perform a system rebuild, if you have purchased a new Compaq
you should have received a Recovery CD with it, this should allow you to
complete a rebuild of your OS and Apps that came with it.

Hi Fran,
That error message indicates a driver issue. Troubleshooting it can be =
lengthy. Check that your hardware and the drivers for it meet the =
compatibility list:
