Modem "in use or improperly configured"

WinXP gives me the following error message when I try to log on to the
Internet: "Error 633. The modem (or other connecting device) is already
in use or is not configured properly."

The modem is a Multi-Tech MT2834ZDX. I think it has been around longer
than XP has. In any case, it has been working flawlessly up to now. (In
fact, I'm posting this message with its aid, running Telix, a DOS-based
terminal emulator. Telix works just fine; no error messages.)

The TR light on the modem is off before I try to dial out of WinXP, so I
doubt if it is in use. (When I try to dial, the LED flickers on for a
fraction of a second, & then it goes out & I get the error message.)
Certainly I have no programs (other than Telix) that use it. I've moved the
modem from COM1 to COM2 (letting WinXP know I've done so) & get the same
error message, so I doubt if it's the port.

I've run through a substantial part of the Troubleshooter with no results.
Can anyone tell me how I can determine why the modem is "improperly con-
figured" for WinXP but not for Telix? Or--more to the point--how to
configure it properly? Any recommendations?

Tom,

Since it had been working flawlessly, perhaps the driver somehow got
corrupted. This site
http://www.multitech.com/SUPPORT/Families/MultiModemZDX/drivers.asp
has the latest drivers - scroll down and look for the MT2834ZDX driver.
Remove the modem from the device list, reboot and reload / update the
driver.

That modem is from '97 (28.8K) - may be time to look at a V.92, 56K modem
and put a little zip in your internet touring if you can.

Thanks. The current driver is the one XP supplied; hard to imagine why
it would bee corrupted. But I'll most certainly try MultiTech.

I downloaded the drivers, removed the modem, got ready to install the new
driver...but the Wizard was too fast for me & re-installed the regular
WinXP driver. But now I can dial. I assume that the driver was indeed
corrupted, but that the file from which the Wizard fetched it wasn't.

So thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
