Very simple query: I bought a laptop pre-installed with
Home XP & WorksSuite 2001, plus I got recovery CDs and
WorksSuite DVD. Motherboard now kaput. Can I reinstall
Home XP &/or WSuite on an old PC? Did I buy this software
when I bought the PC? Any help appreciated. Steph (email
me at StephShadowAThotmailDOTcom)

Preinstalled OEM versions of Windows XP can only be installed
or reinstalled on the same computer it was shipped with. In other
words, you cannot install it on any other computer. If the computer
died, so did your OEM Windows XP license since it is tied to the
original hardware configuration.

Hi Carey.

Isn't it true that many OEM versions of Windows are hardware specific
(especially for laptops) , so that the OEM OS could not possibly run on a
generic desktop or on a different brand laptop?

Thanks.

You may install Works Suite on another computer.

Yes and no.
The OEM recovery disk provided may be a preconfigured image with
sufficiently distinct drivers and configuration that it may not function if
you "recovered" it to another PC.
We can also supply OEMs with installs that are locked to the BIOS etc so
they should not be used on another PC.

The bios locked version, does this mean the owner of the PC cannot update
his/her bios as a result if he/she wished to reinstall XP in the future?

As long as the bios update is supplied by the OEM, it wil be accepted. The
problem would be changed ecessesial hardware, and especially a non-factory
replacement motherboard.
The link below is an explaination from the Microsoft OEM System Builders
group.

OEM software like Works Suite is also non-transferable and unless the
application is supplied on a CD other than the restore CD; there is usually
no way to install it.
