XP Home uses the new Simple File Sharing model for file shares. XP Pro uses
the same model by default when you are not joined to a domain. All network
authentication is done as the guest account, which was deemed simpler than
having to set up a user account with the identical name and password on each
machine that wanted to share. This is not a problem when connecting to other
XP systems using Simple File Sharing, because they expect this and that's
how they prepare their shares.
With XP Pro, you can turn this off, and have each account attempt to
authenticate using the username and password that the interactive user
logged in using. Additionally, they are able to cache passwords to other
network resources, in the event that the initial attempt failed and you have
to manually enter credentials. Consequently, you would only have to enter
them once.
XP Home, however, has no such facilities. That is because of the intended
use: XP Pro is the product designed for business use with extensive
networking, and XP Home is designed for (imagine that) Home use, where you
expect to find a more homogenous environment and simplicity is of primary
importance. In short, you can either endure the annoyance of forcing the
Home product into your business, or upgrade to pro. At $100 a pop, there are
definitely pros and cons.
