Windows XP will not start in Safe Mode so recovery or
reinstall?

If I should use the recovery console on the CD-ROM instead
of doing a repair or inplace upgrade reinstall, what
commands do I use to do the recovery?

Previous subbject: Windows XP will not start past the disk
check

My XP computer will not continue to start up Windows,
either after it does a disk check or if I pass on that
option. I pushed the F8 key to try the boot menu options
and none of them worked past the disk check! I put in the
Windows XP CD-ROM so it could boot from that but that did
not help so I do not know if it even accessed it. It is
an upgrade disk so maybe it does not work as a boot disk.
The Debugging option showed a bunch of lines of text about
various driver files and then just stopped and froze.
Does this mean a virus destroyed files on the hard drive
or has the hard drive just malfunctioned or could XP have
caused it to be messed up? I upgraded from 98 1st Edition
and it seems to have been working fine and then all of a
sudden this!

Last night I downloaded a video driver set up file and
installed it but nothing happened. It was for a PCI
Nvideo (I think) card and I guessed at it being a GeForce
model. Today when I was checking CMOS, I found that it
was evidently the onboard AGP that was being used. I
selected the PCI option for graphics thinking that maybe
the problem was caused by the driver I had installed, but
when that did not help it start, I put it back to the AGP
option. Since the computer seemed to work fine last night
after downloading and installing the video driver for the
PCI video card not being used, I really doubt it has
anything to do with it unless that download included a
virus. Anything anybody can tell me would be greatly
appreciated! Thank you, ~ Wayne

Thanks for your help, but I still have a couple
questions. :-) Since I do not get any error message, how
do I know that the problem is a corrupted registry and
whether I should do a recovery or a repair or in-place
upgrade reinstall? I searched the Knowledge Base but did
not find anything directly addressing either of these two
questions. Thanks, ~ Wayne
