View Full Version : Slow Boot Dell 450Mhz with XP

My friend had me fix her laptop which had been doused with liquid on a
plane and refused to boot. It was a Dell and had a mismatch between the
hibernate file size and the physical Ram. That was fixable from the DOS
prompt using some programs provided on their Diag Floppy's and CD.

The issue now is that after the POST and before the black and white
progress bar at the bottom of the screen the machine sits with an idle
black screen for almost 2 minutes.

It takes another minute to get to the XP Home addition splash screen and
about 45 seconds more it wants to run Scandisk. I let it run once and
it was fine. It can shut down without problem, but when you power it
back up it goes through the whole sequence again.

I can hibernate and restore at normal speeds (for a 450 anyway).

Once it's booted, it seems to be running OK. Any idea what could be
taking so long?

TIA.
