View Full Version : XP Pro - Users Question - Can I easily move Administrator settings to individual user?

Hello,

I recently bought a new computer with XP Pro. Due to a number of rush jobs
I was working on, I did not take the time to set up any users and installed
all of programs and setup all my desktop items using the default
"Administrator" user setting. Now that the rush is over, I am wanting to
set up an individual account and move everything: Desktop settings; Outlook
Accounts; Documents into an individual account for myself.

Is there a way to easily move all the settings in a new account, or perhaps,
simply rename the Administrator to the name I choose?

Thanks,

sct

Don't know if there is an easy way but here is one way. Under c:\Documents
and Settings\Administrator there are several directories that you can just
copy to c:\Documents and Settings\<new user>. The desktop will just copy
all the links from the admin desktop to the new users desktop. Favorites
and My Documents will do the same. The programs installed by the admin
should be available for all users unless you restricted when you were
installing them.

Hope this helps, Ed.

The default Administrator user cannot be renamed - I haven't tried it
myself, but you could attempt to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
(FAST) to back-up and then restore files and settings under the new user -
however, I've only done it system to system, not between users, so I cannot
say for certain whether this is a solution or not, but it sounds logical to
me.
