Over the past couple of days I've noticed that the clock
in the notification area now has the day and date under
it. This in effect has doubled the size of my taskbar -
which I want to the default size not as it it now is
(basically twice the width!)
Any ideas on why this has happened and how to remove the
date and return the taskbar to its correct default width?

Yes..just "grab" the taskbar with your LMB and drag it downwards to the
width you want. Evidently somehow it got grabbed upwards...I prefer to see
the date and time so I ma very familiar with this "feature" of XP.

Put the mouse cursor on top of the top edge of the Taskbar. Press and
hold the left mouse key and the drag the Taskbar to the desired
height.

After you move it back down - right click on the taskbar then
left click the "lock the taskbar" selection.
