View Full Version : What's wrong with my context menus?

I've recently bought a new computer, which takes me from the Windows 98
world into the Windows XP world.
On my new computer, when I double click on a .png file, "Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer" launches, which isn't what I want. If I right-click the
..png file, the menu options are "Preview, Edit with Fireworks, Open,
Edit, Print". "Preview" is in bold, which I suppose is why the
Picture/Fax Viewer launces.
However, when I go to My Computer:Tools:Folder Options:File Types:PNG
file, the Details pane says:
Opens with: Fireworks MX 2004
Files with extension 'PNG' are of type 'Macromedia Fireworks Doc'.
To change settings that affect all 'Macromedia Fireworks Doc' files,
click "Advanced."
(Fireworks is what I WANT to open when I double-click a .wav file)
If I click the "Advanced" tab, only two options are listed - "Edit with
Fireworks" (in bold) and "Open". There is no "Preview" option.
So where does the "Preview" option in the PNG file's context menu come
from? How can I get rid of it? Or at least, how can I get "Preview"
NOT to open by default, but have "Edit with Fireworks" run when I
double-click the icon?
(I should note that I'm having the same problem with WAV files - the
default under the "File Types" is for it to open with "Cool Edit 2000",
but when I double click a WAV file, it opens in Microsoft Sound
Recorder. I'd like to get that changed too.)
Thanks to anyone who can help!
When I double click on a .wav file, Sound Recorder launches, which isn't
what I want. However, when I go to My Computer:Tools:Folder
Options:File Types:WAV file, the Details pane says:
Opens with: Cool Edit 2000
Files with extension 'WAV' are of type "Wave Sound". To change settings
that affect all 'Wave Sound' files, click advanced.
(Cool Edit is what I WANT to open when I double-click a .wav file)
If

well,
when you right-click the icon of the file
the context menu also has the "open with..." option.
selecting it, you get the list of (all the) possible programs that recognize
this type of file.
there you can choose with which program you want to open/edit the file.
if the desired program is not in the upper part list go to the lower part of
the window with the programs and browse for the specific one you want.
last thing, you can mark the bottom square to have the selected program
"always" open your files of this type with.
this marking is supposed to change the permanent connection between the file
type (ending) and the asscosiated program for it.
