What do you do when a message just has a small square
in the upper left corner with an x in it?

The person who sent you the email (picture) may have to check their settings
here:
Go to Tools, then Options. Then click: Send Tab, then
Mail Sending Format: HTML Setting, then make sure the "Send with Pictures"
box is checked
They may also have Hotbar installed.
