since installing Windows XP Professional I am unable to use my Canon S100SP or my Canon BJC-85 printers despite re-installing the software.

You have to have XP compatible softwar/drivers!

Go to the appropriate Canon website, and download XP compatible drivers..

If you kept the printers connected to the PC during the upgrade the drivers
are a) incorrect and b) corrupted.

Follow the instructions at my website for uninstalling and reinstalling your
printers correctly.
