I have noticed that although I deleted a web browser and
e mail client other than IE6 and OE6 from my computer
that they are still refered to when I right click start,
then click properties and then customize in Taskbar and
Start Menu properties window. I am refering to underneath
where it says show on start menu where there are two tick
boxes for Internet and e mail in customize start menu
window. Being very new to XP and computers in general I'd
appreciate some help.:-)

Open IE.
Go to Tools | Internet Options | Programs.
Check the box that IE should check to see if it's the default browser.
Close and re-open IE.
Click Yes.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the alternative browser
and e mail client are still in lists.

Click the "N", scroll down to: "Notification Area - Remove Past Icons"

Remove Past Items From the Notification Area (Line 53, Left-hand side)

Worked for me.
