Hello everyone. My wife has a Toshiba Satellite 1135 -
S155 laptop. When she puts in a dvd, windows media player
will play the dvd for about 5 seconds. Windows media
player shuts down and and a message pops up that says
that "Windows media player has encountered a problem and
needs to close." She upgraded from WMP7 to WMP9, same
thing happens. She has downloaded the newest Divx player
and downloaded all of the windows updates. When she trys
to use other players such as the Divx the exact same
thing happens. What could be the problem? Should she
reinstall windows or what? Thank you in advance for your
help.

Divx has absolutely nothing to do with the ability to play (or not play) a
DVD. DIVX is used to encode some AVI files and compress them, therefore
making them smaller and take up less space on a hard drive.

Does the notebook in question have current DVD decoding software
installed.... usually PowerDVD or WinDVD, whichever came with the notebook.
If so, try reinstalling it. If not, then the DVD CANNOT play, since the
correct DVD codecs are not present.
