There are dozens of changes you can make in the registry
to speed up XP. www.kellys-korner-xp.com has some good
tweaks. www.dougknox.com also has some. An excellent free
program for the beginner that actually works as advertised
is SpeedXP. Do an internet search for it and get the
download closest to you. Keep your system defragged and
run chkdisk at least once a month. Make sure you use the
disk cleanup on the odd occassion. Have as much RAM as you
can afford. I recommend 512MB. Disable such things as
paging executive. If you need extra help with editing
