XP shutting down

Just upgraded W98 to XP. System now randomly shuts down
and restarts in the middle of tasks, whether on the
internet or not. Anyone have similar experience? Running
on Gateway P3.

It doesn't happen to me, but my cousin has told me that
it happens to him 2-3 times a day. no error message, just
restarts. he just got his pc at christmas. he has XP

Random spontaneous reboots can be related to a number of issues. One thing
to do is turn off the autorestart on system failure option . Go to Control
Panel->System Properties->Advanced Tab. Click the bottom Settings button and
uncheck the box that enables Automatically restart on system failure. Then
apply out and restart the computer. The next time the system crashes it
should go to a Blue Screen with some error info on it. Post this back as it
might help us ferret out the problem. If the system is under warranty you
should consult the manufacturer.

Common problems causing reboots include

- Powersupply. Ensure your system is plugged in firmly. Some BIOS are set to
automatically reboot after a power interruption. Is you system on a
dedicated circuit or are there other appliances - like a fridge - on the
same circuit. A fridge cutting in could cause enough of a power drop to
effect the reboot. Is your area prone to "Brown-outs"? If so that might also
be the source of the problem.

- Flaky RAM. Try reseating the RAM modules. If that doesn't help and you
have more than one module try removing one and see if the system will run
stable. If not swap out the sticks and try again. This is the process of
elimination. You might also be able to simply take your RAM sticks into a
service center that uses a RAM tester and get them tested that way.

- Heat. Check to ensure the fan on both your CPU and powersupply are
running. These fans should turn very quickly. Immediately replace faulty CPU
fans or an overheating powersupply

- Overclocking. Overclocked systems can develop heat issues that could
result in reboots. If your system is overclocked try clocking back and see
if that helps.
