Sheryl,

First, make sure that the favorites files exists in the hard disk. Do a =
search for *.URL files. If they are intact, open Registry Editor and =
goto:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User=
Shell Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shel=
l Folders

In both the locations, look for the value "Favorites" in the right-pane =
and post the contents here.

And are you using Earthlink?

I had setup a lot of folders as shortcuts and saved them=20
as favorites. For over a year I used these all the=20
time. Now, only internet pages will save and all of my=20
shortcut folders have been deleted. I can set them up=20
again, but as soon as I log off, they are deleted again. =20
Why is this happening? What can I do?

Thanks,
Sheryl

Hi Sheryl,

In addition, there are several viriii/worms, etc out now that cause this.
To rule that out, run each of these:

Ad-Aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Spybot
http://tinyurl.com/btf8

CWShredder (Line 313)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Hijack This
http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

Free Online Virus Scan
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

If this isn't the case:

Fix for History/Favorites are removed or not saved:

I have seen this behavior caused by McAfee and from the date and time being
incorrect. Checkpoints and Suggestions:

Check to be sure that your date and time is correct. Also, if you are using
McAfee, this will help:

McAfee gave this solution to the bug where VirusScan 6 stops your
Internet Explorer History file working.

Open VirusScan console
Select "Pick a task..."
Select "Change my VirusScan settings"
Select "Configure VShield background scanning"
Select "Customise your VShield settings"

Select the "Internet Filter" icon from the icons down the left hand side On
the "Detection" tab, in the 'Applet filters' section, remove the tick next
to "ActiveX Controls".

Added Tip:

Prevent IE History from Being Removed - Undo (Line 101)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Note: If you are using the Personalized Favorites Menu, Internet Explorer
automatically hides site that are rarely visited from the Favorites menu.

No I am not using Earthlink, but let me clarify. My
internet page "Favorites" are still saving fine. It is
my shortcuts to folders on Network drives that are no
longer saving.

I am actually using a work computer trying to save=20
shortcuts to network folders as Favorites. This is a=20
very large company that uses Norton. I own Ad-Aware for=20
my home PC, but I do not have admin rights at work to use=20
it... which also means I could not have mistakenly put=20
any spyware on my workstation either.=20
