HP Deskjet 1220c not working

I am connecting my hp 1220c deskjet to my new dell 8300
via usb connection. The os recognizes the printer,
instructs that the driver is being installed, and
acknowledges that it is ready. The properties of the
printer say the device is ready but there is no
communication. The test page doesn't print. I tried a
new driver from hp but it hangs up during the
installation. Anyone else? Help!

Did you install the software BEFORE connecting the printer?

If not, do a total uninstall and reinstall.
