A friend of mine has a slightly older emachine, with XP home. The son was
using the computer, it froze up on the internet, he claims he turned it off
at the power switch, and when he turned it back on the problem began.

The machine will begin booting, coming up to the Windows XP screen, you
know, the one with the black background and cute little scrolling bar, so
you won't think it's not working, then you get a BSOD with a long message
flashed up for maybe 1/4 second, then it goes back to the screen telling you
it was shut down improperly or has a problem, select one of the options -
safe mode, with networking, with command prompt, normal, etc. - and no
matter what you select it goes thru all the steps above again...loading
windows, BSOD, problem screen, and so on.

Any and all guesses will be pondered upon, thanks folks!

I tried that last night. It keeps asking for the administrator's password,
and I don't know how to bypass that. For that matter, if the people who own
this machine ever established one it would be a miracle. They once asked me
to come out to the house and see if I could figure out what was wrong with
their computer, it "...justs sits there and won't do anything..."

Of course, when I arrived and turned on the computer it displayed "Invalid
system disk. Remove and press any key." I nearly died trying to avoid
laughing at them.

Anyway, problem now is administrator's password. Any help, anyone?
