I am not sure why you are disappointed. Microsoft Word never has been part
of any version of the Windows Operating System. Sometimes when you buy a
computer, it comes with a software package preinstalled (bundled with the
computer). Windows by itself does not contain Word. In order for you to
get Word you must go and purchase it by itself, or buy a version of the
Microsoft Office Suite (which is a better deal).

No version of Windows ever included Microsoft Word. Windows is an operating
system, and Microsoft Word is a program. Word probably came bundled with
other software on your old system when shipped from the maker. If you still
have your old MS Office or MS Word CD, from that system, and you're not
using the old system, you can use that CD to install Office/Word on your new
system. (If your old system didn't include individual CDs for the software,
but only came with a system recovery CD, the above option isn't applicable)
Otherwise: Oddly, the stand alone version of MS Word is not the least
expensive way to purchase it. The stand alone version of Word retails for
about $229 (MS site suggested price). The Microsoft Works Suite, which used
to have its own proprietary word processor, now comes with MS Word, and
retails for about $99. That really doesn't make sense to me. So, the least
expensive retail way to obtain MS Word would be buying the MS Works Suite
2004. You can of course go to online sites like http://www.pricewatch.com/
and get older or OEM versions of MS Word for less. But then there's
shipping costs, and if there's a problem with the CD, you're at the mercy of
whomever you purchased the OEM version from. If I only needed MS Word, and
didn't have the Word or Office CD from my previous system, I'd go to
someplace that has a generous return policy, and reasonable prices, like
Wal-Mart, and purchase MS Works Suite 2004. Even if you don't use any of
the other MS Works Suite software, it's worth the price to get MS Word for
half the retail price of the stand alone version.
From the Microsoft site:

Disappointed? Why are you disappointed? Windows XP is no
different than any other version of Windows in this regard. No
version of Windows has ever come with Word, nor with any other
significant application software.

Buy Microsoft Works Suite, which includes it.

MS Word has never been a part of any operating system. Your old
computer may have had a copy bundled with it but that was an option
the vendor choose to install perhaps as a selling point.
Anyway, here are some alternatives to MS Word and they are FREE...
Open Office = www.openoffice.org
602 Office = http://www.software602.com/products/pcs/

Word and Windows are two different programs.
