Is there a way to globally change the listing of files in a directory
and its subdirectories in My Computer from icons to details? I have a
USB hard drive with an extensive directory structure, and when I
remove and reconnect the drive to the USB port it seems to default to
file icons in My Computer. Its too tedious to select details on a
directory by directory basis.

Open windows explorer.
Choose detail view
go to tools - view options
click on "Apply to all folders"
Apply - ok
