i am trying to format my hard drive. I get to the dos
prompt and enter Format C: then it prompts me to put in
HP_PAVILION, then it tells me if i would like to force a
dismount on this volume, i type yes. Then tells me Cannot
lock the drive. The volume is still in use. What give and
what is the volume still in use. I just want to format my
drive and thro the CD back in and reload XP?? Any help
would be more than welcomed> Thanks. Can i load XP back
to hard drive from CD after format??

Set your BIOS to boot from CD. Boot from the CD and follow the instructions
for a new installation. The option to Format will appear.

Refer to your machine's manual as to how to access the BIOS settings.

You must do a format of your system disk from a boot floppy or a boot CD.
You cannot issue a format command for a system disk from the system disk,
for obvious reasons (you would be wiping out the brains that controls the
format).
