The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:
1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your =
computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the =
existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the =
primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.
5. Windows XP Clean Install:=20

Set your computer's bios to boot from cd-rom.
Insert the XP cd, and boot from it. You will probably see a message to press
any key to continue to boot from the cd, do so when prompted.
XP setup will load, choose new install.
Agree to the license agreement, then new install. Point to your existing XP
installation, and choose to reformat from there. You will be given the
option of partitioning there as well as choosing whether to format in NTFS
or Fat32. Personally, I would recommend NTFS as it has advanced security
features and supposedly is more stable.
Don't forget to backup any important data files you don't want to lose,
reformatting will wipe everything out.
Hope this helps,

The setup CD for XP itself can do the formatting. Just boot your PC from the
WinXP setup CD (assuming CD boots before hard-disk boot) and follow the
instructions.

It is not necessary to format before doing a clean install of XP, but to see
the different options on formatting a hard drive running XP see the
see links below and if using the web based newsgroups copy and paste the
links into the web browser address bar.
