the comcast broadband internet cd somehow customized IE & Outlook Express so
that the title bars read:

"Outlook Express provided by Comcast"
"Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Comcast"

how can I revert back to the default titles?

Click Start | Run | and type the following commands one by one: and press
Enter

"Rundll32 IedkCS32.dll,BrandCleanInstallStubs"
"Rundll32 IedkCS32.dll, Clear"

Both commands does the same almost. The first one also resets "Windows
Update Menu Text" in IE.

Remove IE/OE Branding:

Remove ISP branding from Outlook Express:
