When I start Outlook Express the msmsgs.exe icon appears in the systray. I
have gone into msconfig and disabled ms messenger and also in Outlook
Express where it doesn't appear as an option to disable it anymore.I have
tried xp hide messenger in outlook express.vbs file, but when I reboot it
reappears in the systray and under msconfig it has rechecked itself to run.
Any ideas as to what I can do to make it stop doing this!
Thanks,Dave.

XP AntiSpy will get rid of it.

If page comes up in German click on Union Jack.

If you are wanting to turn the messenger off completely,
you can go to the Messenger file in C: and rename it
MessengerOFF. Startup will not be able to detect it and
it will not run. Don't forget if you ever decide you want
to use it in the future, rename it back.

To prevent MS Messenger from loading with OE you must do BOTH of these
things:

In Tools | Options uncheck the option to automatically logon to Messenger.

AND

In View | Layout uncheck the Contacts Pane.

OR

Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Add a New, DWORD value called Hide Messenger and set the value to 2.
(This step is required to prevent a long delay when opening OE with the
Contacts pane enabled)

To just stop it from running at all follow this advice from Kelly:

"Only 3 Registry edits are required to stop Messenger and get rid of the
delay in OE. Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Mes senger\Client

Add the following values as New, DWord Values:

PreventRun
PreventAutoRun

Set the value of each of these to 1

You can also stop the spam without disabling Messenger. In Messenger select
Tools | Options and open the Privacy tab. In MSN Messenger 5 there a check
box "Only people on My Allow List can see my status and send me messages"
that you can check (turn on). In Windows Messenger 4.7 you can select the
"All other users" in My Allow List and move it to My Block List. In both
cases the popus should stop and you can still IM with your friends.

Frank,
Cheers Frank, I had the same problem and going in to the Registry and
putting in the 2 keys sorted out the problem.
