What , in essence is being stated, is that anyone purchasing the current OS
on or after 01/01/2004 is purchasing an OS that is . . . not supported.

I have been a user since WfW 3.11. I believe that this is the first
instance in which support ended . . . BEFORE a new version was released.

Oh well, RedHat will abandon the Desktop Platform on 04/30/2004 totally: no
further distributons and no further support. At least Microsoft hasn't
gone . . . that far- yet.

BTW: What's with 811493? I've installed it EVERY MORNING since . . thursday.
It has now become annoying.
Yes, I Shut Down and Restart, go through the day and the next moring it is
presented as a "New Update Downloaded and Ready to be Installed".

err ... no.

All XP purchases i've made (OEM builds) have come supplied with SP1=20
included.

Given what i've read, that means approx 2 years further support.

Wrong. You cannot buy a pc without sp1 anymore. The current offering from ms
includes sp1 on oem computers and in retail stores, so it is supported.

Support isn't ending. Install sp1 and your all set.

They never will. Product life cycle always extends far into the the next
versions release.

Possible solutions:

1 - Delete or rename the folder c:\windows\system32\catroot2

Then do the updates again.

2 - Start/stop the auto-update service.

Start, control panel, administrative tools, services, right click automatic
updates, click stop. Right click again, click start.
