in device manager i see that i have a large yellow question mark against
"other devices". these are Multimedia Audio Controllerand USB Controller.
right-clicking and properties shows that the drivers are not installed. i do
not have a disk for these so i have downloaded/opened the ones that were
advised by the computer helpline and they are now on the end of the list but
the yelloow question mark is still there. what have i done wrong and how can
i put it right?

Delete all the devices with the ? and see if they come back after a
restart. If so, delete the devices that occured when you installed the
new drivers and the ones with the ?. When Windows restarts and you are
prompted for to install the "new" devices, point Windows to the driver
files that you downloaded/installed.

I remember code 28. that's a sound problem, right? In case I don't see
your reply. I'm guessing you have no sound. Common in XP after upgrade or
install of other device. Hard to say what's wrong. I usually reinstall XP.
but that's a pain and can wipe out info.

An excellent tool like Aida32 will help you to identify the manufacturer of your USB and any other devices like the PCI. Aida32 has many links that will direct you to the driver download sites for your stuff or at the very least the manufacturers site to g
et help. The problem is that USB controllers are made by thousands of suppliers and can greatly depend on such things as your chipset. If you don't know what these are then this can be a tiring and frustrating experiance. http://www.computerhope.com/help/b
us.htm#10 gives you some idea of how to go about determining your PCI . Aida32 is you best bet.
