I recently switched from Xp Home to Xp Pro w/ the latest patches.
1. About once per month something turns on mute in the Play Control/Wave
(files) so my sound goes dead. I don't know what causes this. I go into the
system tray/volume (speaker icon) and uncheck the mute box and everything is
OK until the next time. Anyone else experience this mystery? Is there a fix?
2. I use a Sony Multiscan 400PS crt monitor and a NVidia GeForce3Ti200 card.
I installed the latest NVidia driver. Until recently, the "display" in the
control panel/display/settings/advanced showed the specific Sony monitor -
now all I get is "default monitor" and can't change it back. I had a slight
flicker which I cured by uping the refresh rate from 72 th 85hz. When I
showed the Sony monitor there was no flicker at 72hz. Is there a way I can
"add new hardware" delete the generic monitor and show the monitor as a Sony
Multiscan 400PS?

You install a monitor driver. Wiondows always chooses Plug n Play if it =
chooses.
There is no such thing as 400PS. Sony monitors have a three letter =
prefix eg GDM-400PS

I was running into the same problem with wav sound being muted. I have a
Sound Blaster sound card, so I went to the Microsoft update page and
installed the drivers from Creative Labs. That took care of the problem.
That tells me your sound card drivers need to be updated.
Good Luck
