View Full Version : hibernation or the stand-by

Hi all,
Can someone help me with this minor problem. Everytime I use either
the hibernation or the stand-by and let the unit sit for several
hours, (sometimes overnight), when I go back to start the PC, it is
locked up..

Please explain further. What do you mean by "locked up"? At what point is
the system frozen?
You have to ask a competent question to receive a competent answer from the
good people here!

OK, let me see if I can put this into plain language.
Locked-up= NOTHING WORKS. As if someone put a lock on a door and it
won't open. No mouse movement, can't get the task bar to come up,
can't delete anything, can not (cant) open any programs.
This occurs when either I put the computer, otherwise known as a PC
into the "Hibernate or Standyby" mode.
I should appologize, I am using the operating system Windows XP Pro,
with 512 meg of RAM, 160 Gig of harddrive and all Windows XP Pro
updates completed.

So, it locks up when you get back to the desktop when coming out of
standby/hibernate, as opposed to staying a blank screen when you resume from
standby/hibernate?
A huge difference!
The causes will be quite different. Give me a bit to get back to you as I
have to leave for a bit.

Most likely issue, when the GUI is hung, is video drivers. There could also
be a BIOS issue, but start with video drivers first.

In mouse--hardware--properties--power management set 'allow this device to

Thanks for the help, but that was a bust. I don't have that option
with my mouse. However, I have checked the "power manger" and that
was no help either. I do have the Hibernation set to activate when I
call for it.

Maybe we understand hibernate and standby differently? Hibernate causes all
the programs currently loaded to be written on the disk and then power is
turned off. To come out of 'hibernate' you must press the power on button.
Standby, leaves everything loaded but the system goes to sleep (HD stops,
monitor shuts down etc) To get out of standby (wake up the computer) you can
either move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard. Or, on my system you
could also press the power on button. With this information could you
describe your problem? Is it shutting down? Are you trying hibernate or
standby?

Mr. Unknown,
Please excused me for not having responded sooner, but I had a hard
time finding the a #60 grit sandpaper to remove the egg from my face.
I appologize for being short.
You are right, they are both two different opperations, I have done
more T/S since I last entered the question and it seems that it is
only the standby mode that locks the system up. For the life of me I
can not recall why I put in the hibernation mode too.
Anyway, it is the "Standby Mode" that causes the system to lock when
left for a while. A while can be anything from about 5 minutes to
several hours.

Ok. Resetting to zero. To use standby, you should make sure you have the
latest level BIOS. APM must be enabled in the BIOS. There are three ways to
put a system in stand by.
1. Pressing power on button when power is on. This is set in control
panel--power options--advanced tab--and setting 'when i press the power on
button----standby in the window. Set the lower window to standby also for
the 'sleep button. Do NOT put a check mark on 'allow hibernation' under the
hibernation tab.
2. Sleep button-- may be called 'standby' button and is set as above.
3. Click start--turn off computer--click standby. If your computer is setup
to hibernate the 'standby' is replaced with a hibernate button on this power
down window.
4. To exit standby bothe the mouse and keyboard settings should be made. In
mouse--hardware--properties--power management tab--set allow this device to
bring computer out of standby. Same in keyboard--hardware--properties--power
management---allow this device to bring computer out of standby.
To use power management you must have a computer set up by the manufacturer
to support this feature.
some computer components will not allow power management or will cause
erratic operation. ISA devices (industry standard architecture) will cause
problems.
Hope this helps. I use standby but NOT hibernate.

Thank you for all the help. But why do you use the "stand by" when it
really does not save your information, whereas the "hibernation" saves
it to the harddrive and will recall it all when started back up?
