We have uninstalled Palm V 4.1 from XP Pro machine.
Cannot reinstall the software getting error:
1607 Unable to install installshield scripting runtime

I have searched the windows database for answers and can't
find any? Anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this
problem?

You might be confusing Office XP (student/teacher edition, IIRC) and WinXP.

WinXP, no you can't, OfficeXP edu. allows you to load onto a desktop and
laptop. (Cool that someone wrote that into a license.)
Office 2003 - I don't know. I'd look to see if the educational
(student/teacher) version can be.

Alex;
Windows XP Pro:
No, one license, one computer, the same as with all Microsoft
operating systems at least back to Windows 95.

"Windows 2003 office"
No such thing.
There is Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Office 2003.
If you mean Microsoft Office 2003, that depends on your specific
license.
If Office is OEM, one computer only, the one originally installed.
Read your EULA for details.

according to palm, if you have win xp, then you need the palm 5 desktop. 4
doesn't work. you can download the new software from the palm one website. i
think which download you choose is determined by the "flavor" of palm that
you have (mine was a handspring.)
palm 5 softwarre works perfectly on win xp pro

If you are referring to Office 2003 (Windows 2003 office), you can load the
Student/Teacher edition on 3 PCs.

Greetings --

1) No, of course not.

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA, if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. The only way in which WinXP licensing differs from
that of earlier versions of Windows is that Microsoft has finally
added a copy protection and anti-theft mechanism, Product Activation,
to prevent (or at least make more difficult) multiple installations
using a single license

You can, however, buy additional retail licenses, assuming you
have a retail license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional
OEM licenses. Be aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this
way than you would if you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a
discount retailer; Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off
their MSRP.

Additional Licenses for Windows XP Professional
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp

2) My retail Office 2003 Pro EULA reads:

"1.1 Installation and use. You may install and use a copy of the
Software on one personal computer or other device located within your
home. "

No mention of the "one desktop and one portable computer" allowed
on some earlier versions.

(Guessing that this is what you meant, as there's no such product
as "Windows 2003 office.")

No version of Windows may, under the license (apart from special volume
licenses for corporations). They are limited to a single computer..
Hence the Product Activation system, to bring the point home.

MS Office (not 'Windows Office' - a very confusing description) if it
is a retail copy, has a concession to add a laptop that is the personal
machine of the owner of the desktop machine where it is initially
installed, but that is only Office.

Is there _any_ non-academic verion of Office that allows one desktop
and one laptop ?

As far as I know, _all_ retail versions of Office allow it. The following is
a cut-and-paste from the EULA from my copy of Word (from Office 2003):

1. GRANT OF LICENSE. Microsoft grants you the following rights provided
that you comply with all terms and conditions of this EULA:
1.1 Installation and use. You may:
(a) install and use a copy of the Software on one personal computer or
other device; and
(b) install an additional copy of the Software on a second, portable device
for the exclusive use of the primary user of the first copy of the Software.

Can't be much clearer than that, can it?

Licences for OEM versions of Office, like all Windows OS's are for a single
PC only.
